Did you know that four schools on the Costa del Sol have been named amongst the best international schools in Spain?

As well as the incredible lifestyle and weather Southern Spain offers, a huge attraction to the coast is the quality of education and choice of schooling options, both public and private.

Parents have much to think about when choosing the right school and one of the main worries families have when moving to a different country is whether their children will fit in, enjoy and adapt to a different culture, whilst still receiving quality education that prepares them for what comes after.

My parents for example had that fear when they moved from London to Estepona with my brother and I at 10 and 8 years old. Due to our beginners’ level of Spanish and my brother being dyslexic, they chose to send us to the international school of Aloha College, one that has an English curriculum but teaches the Spanish language and classes have 15-20 students (less than half the amount of a UK school), allowing teachers to spend more time helping individual children.

As a result, both my brother and I loved our time at this school. We learnt Spanish at a good pace, adapted into a new system and my brother was able to improve his academic ability. Many of these international schools also offer great extra-curricular activities and summer schools, something we were both put into that kept us active and helped build our confidence in areas we may have been lacking.

This is another important factor to consider when choosing the right school; whether they offer extra activities, tuition and programmes, and gives you the ability to make a choice based on what is best for your child.

Not only is there a great choice for English families, but the Costa del Sol also has a variety of schooling options for German, Swedish and French families, all of which teach Spanish while offering lessons in their native tongue – a great way to ease children into a new life and culture abroad.

Whether you have lived here for a while or are considering the move with your children, the Costa del Sol presents a wide range of options that cater to a number of nationalities.

Below is a list of some of the top international schools on the Coast:

  • Sotogrande International School

    Location: Sotogrande

  • The British International School of Marbella

As well as private schools, there are many options for families who wish for their children to be taught within the Spanish educational system at public schools. These schools are free of charge, still offering a great education and is actually the best way for your child to become fluent in Spanish and immersed in a new culture. Should my brother and I have been younger when moving to the Costa del Sol, my parents would have definitely chosen to do this.

When searching for a property on the Costa del Sol, it’s important to consider the educational facilities that are nearby and what they each have to offer your children. At Alegra Estates, we have a number of incredible properties located near each of these schools.
